Caramel Jelly Pie

3 eggs              1/2 cup cream
1 cup sugar

1/2 cup jelly (grape is very good)
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 teaspoon salt   1 teaspoon vanilla

Beat yolks of eggs with one-half of the sugar, cream shortening and add remaining sugar gradually. Combine mixtures, add jelly (which has been beaten until smooth) cream, vanilla and salt. Fold in the stiffly
beaten egg whites. Bake in a deep pie pan that has been lined with flake pastry and well chilled. Have oven heated to 450 degrees, after ten minutes reduce the temperature to 350 degrees and bake from forty-five minutes to one hour. The pie should be removed from pan to cake cooler as soon as it is removed from the oven to prevent crust from becoming soggy.
